Printer Error Messages: What They Mean and How to Fix Them
7 min readMay 2026By Computer Repair Roswell
Universal First Steps
Before looking up a specific error code, these three steps fix a surprising percentage of printer errors:
Power cycle the printer: Turn it completely off, wait 30 seconds, turn it back on. Many transient errors (jam detected when there's no jam, cartridge errors after a fresh install) clear with a full power cycle.
Check for actual paper jams: Even if there's no visible paper, look inside all paper paths — including the rear access panel, under the cartridge area, and the manual feed tray. A small scrap can cause persistent jam errors.
Reseat all cartridges: Remove each ink or toner cartridge, wait 10 seconds, reinstall firmly until it clicks. A partially seated cartridge triggers various cryptic errors including "cartridge not recognized" and "ink system failure."

Waste ink absorber errors (Canon 1700, Epson Maintenance Box) are not fixable by the user. These require physical pad replacement or a service reset — both of which require either purchasing parts or professional servicing. A printer that hits this error has typically printed 20,000–50,000+ pages and may be near end of economic life.
