The Slow Computer Problem

A slow computer is one of the most common complaints we hear in our shop. What starts as a fast, responsive machine gradually turns into something that takes 3 minutes to boot and 30 seconds to open a browser tab. This slowdown isn't normal wear — it's a symptom with identifiable causes, and almost all of them are fixable.

This article covers the most common causes ranked by how often we see them, and explains both the DIY fixes and when it makes sense to bring the machine in for a professional tune-up or upgrade.

Top Causes of Slow Performance

#1

Hard Disk Drive (HDD) as the Boot Drive

If your computer still has a spinning hard drive rather than an SSD, this is almost certainly the biggest bottleneck. SSDs are 5–10x faster for the operations your OS performs constantly. An SSD upgrade is the single highest-impact upgrade available for most older machines.

#2

Malware Running in the Background

Adware, miners, and other malware consume CPU and RAM while hiding from the user. A machine that used to be fast but suddenly slowed should always be scanned before anything else.

#3

Too Many Startup Programs

Every app you install wants to start with Windows. After a year, you may have 20+ programs launching at startup, each consuming memory and CPU before you've even opened a browser.

#4

Insufficient RAM

8GB is the minimum for comfortable Windows 10/11 use today. With 4GB, the OS pages constantly to disk (or virtual memory), which is painfully slow — especially on an HDD.

#5

Overheating / Thermal Throttling

When a CPU or GPU overheats, it intentionally slows itself down to prevent damage. A machine that runs fine when cold but slows down after 20 minutes is almost certainly throttling.

#6

Low Disk Space

Windows and macOS need free space to operate — for virtual memory, temporary files, and updates. Below 10–15% free space, the OS struggles. Below 5%, performance degrades severely.

#7

Failing Hard Drive

A drive with bad sectors reads slowly as it retries failed reads. The machine feels slow for no apparent reason, and File Explorer may hang when browsing folders. This is urgent — failing drives fail completely.

Quick Fixes You Can Do Right Now

1. Check What's Using Your CPU and RAM

On Windows: Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager → Processes tab → sort by CPU or Memory. On Mac: Applications → Utilities → Activity Monitor. Look for any process consuming more than 20% CPU without you actively using it — that's your culprit.

2. Disable Startup Programs

On Windows: Task Manager → Startup Apps tab. Right-click any non-essential app and select Disable. On Mac: System Settings → General → Login Items. Remove everything you don't recognize or need at startup.

3. Free Up Disk Space

  • Windows: Settings → System → Storage → Storage Sense to auto-clean temporary files
  • Also run Disk Cleanup (search "disk cleanup" → also clean system files)
  • Mac: Apple menu → About This Mac → Storage → Manage
  • Empty Trash/Recycle Bin and clear Downloads folder

4. Scan for Malware

Download Malwarebytes (free version), run a full scan, and remove everything it finds. This alone has transformed machines from unusably slow to perfectly fine in our shop many times.

When a Tune-Up Isn't Enough: Upgrades That Work

SSD upgrade. Replacing an HDD with an SSD is the most cost-effective computer repair we perform. Boot times drop from 2–3 minutes to under 20 seconds. Applications open instantly. We clone your existing drive, so you lose nothing — files, programs, settings all transfer. Cost is typically $100–$180 including the drive and labor.

Adding RAM is the second most impactful upgrade for machines that regularly run near their memory capacity. For machines with 4GB, upgrading to 8GB or 16GB is inexpensive and immediately noticeable.

How We Speed Up Slow Computers

When a slow computer comes into our shop, we run a full diagnostic: malware scan, startup audit, disk health check, RAM stress test, and thermal performance assessment. We give you an honest assessment of whether a tune-up, upgrade, or (rarely) replacement is the right call for your machine and budget.

Free diagnostic. We figure out exactly what's making your machine slow at no charge. You get a clear recommendation before any repair work begins — and a 90-day warranty on all work performed.
